Laziness is a common challenge that affects many people, myself included. But it can be overcome with the right mindset and techniques. Here are some tips to help you overcome laziness in no time, I know easier said than done, been there, but since when I have been practicing these tips, things have gotten serious, and I found myself quite motivated for the work of the day, and I can do those tasks with more focus and energy. And I believe these tips can help you too, so without any further delay, let’s start:
Set clear, achievable goals and write them down(this is very important, I know sometimes things come to mind but don’t stay, so I will recommend you to write down any tiny detail that can help you later). Make sure your goals are specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and time-bound (SMART). Having a clear target to work towards will give you a sense of purpose and motivation.
But along with the clear set, you will need to have a perfect system as well, the system is the one that can build or break a habit for you, if you want to know about it in detail you should read Atomic Habits by James Clear. Beautiful Book.
Breaking down large tasks into smaller, more manageable chunks can help you overcome laziness and get things done. Focus on one task at a time and take small steps towards completion. What I would like to do is to have a to-do list a night before that can ease this step out for me already. I am using Google Keep and Google Calendar collectively for this task, easy for me, You guys share what is the best tool according to you, to manage the to-do list, that you are currently using.
Making a to-do list is easy but prioritizing your tasks is difficult. Focus on the most important and urgent tasks first, and tackle smaller tasks later. In the beginning, I used to write 10 tasks a day on my to-do list, to make it feel like I had achieved so many things, but it just made me exhausted, I had no time to spare to spend with my family or even my time. I would recommend you to add 1 or at most 2 important tasks in your to-do list, and 2 helping or supportive tasks along with it.
Eliminate distractions, such as social media, email, and TV, to increase your focus and productivity. Turn off your phone or move it to another room to reduce the temptation to check it frequently. What I do is that I keep my cell phone on airplane mode, for 1st block(we will talk about blocks in the next section). and after that, I will use my cell phone for like 30 minutes at most, or any other leisure activity, and then again, back to work.
Use timers to stay on task and avoid procrastination. Set a timer for a specific amount of time and work on a task until the timer goes off. Take a short break, then set the timer again and continue working. You can divide your time into 3 blocks, 1st block is for serious focused stuff, any sort of productive things that you have to work harder on, then 2nd block is just for you, do whatever you want to do in it, man.
I like to play video games or watch some anime. Then in the 3rd block, the work is normal and you just know what to do, you just don’t have to pay attention, to some sort of work that you can perform even with distraction, such as replying to comments, reaching out to sponsorships, etc.
Find someone who you can be accountable to, such as a friend or family member. Checking in with them regularly will help keep you motivated and on track. When I left and job, and eventually pursued my own dream to become a successful digital marketer and content writer, it was so difficult, I didn’t have motivation, I was always like, “I will do it someday, let’s stay in bed for 1 hour more, nothing will happen, you don’t have to be anywhere,” and that is where it all went wrong.
What I did then, was that I started looking for like-minded people, I started chatting with friends working on their own gigs, to check out how they were so active and into their work. I joined them in a new venture where we will be accountable for a week’s personal performance in respective fields, and it turned out to be so great for me and for them as well. If you have friends like that, you can count on them, if not, no worries, you can connect with me on Linkedin, and we will do the accountability for each other.
Reward yourself when you complete tasks or reach your goals. Treat yourself to something you enjoy, like a favorite food, movie, or activity. Celebrating your achievements will help you stay motivated and focused. What I like to do is play some video games, mostly battle royale like Apex Legend, and COD Warzone, or spend time with my family, this really boosts me morally and physically for the next block of work and in general also. You can do the same if you have just completed some semi-goal.
Exercise is a great way to overcome laziness and increase your energy levels. Get up and move around, go for a walk, or do some light stretching. Even a short burst of physical activity can help you feel more energized and focused. Do some lunges, move away from that chair, try to keep walking in your 2nd block more, and keep yourself hydrated, many people take it lightly, but it is important.
Find your passion and pursue it with purpose. Doing something you love will give you a sense of fulfillment and help you overcome laziness. If you have a degree in some field, doesn’t mean you have to stick with It, if that had been the case, I would have become an accountant or a Banker(God Forbid). Do what you like, Explore yourself, it happens with everyone, Sometimes they think they can do everything, and yet there is a time when you think you can’t even do the thing you have a proper degree in. For me, jack of all is the positive point of view.
Focus on progress, not perfection. Celebrate small victories and be kind to yourself. Don’t get discouraged by setbacks or failures; instead, use them as opportunities to learn and grow. This blog, you are currently reading, I started in 2022, but the first complete year was not great, but I never lost hope, I stuck to it and currently, its outcomes are exceeding my expectations. So, what do we learn? Consistency is the key, no matter what are the results in the beginning, go with the flow, every new thing takes time.
In conclusion, I would like to say that overcoming laziness takes time, effort, and a positive attitude. By setting clear goals, breaking tasks into smaller chunks, eliminating distractions, rewarding yourself, and finding your passion, you can overcome laziness and achieve your goals. Remember, progress takes time, so be patient and keep pushing forward. It’s not like that after following these steps, laziness does not exist, but, you have a proper system that will help you to fight that laziness.
