Using chopsticks may seem daunting at first, but with a little practice, it can become second nature. Chopsticks, also known as Hashi, are a traditional utensil in many Asian cultures and are commonly used for eating sushi, ramen, and other Asian dishes.
In this blog, I will go over the basics of how to use chopsticks and some tips to help you master the art of chopstick use. I really wanted to learn how to use chopsticks, so I researched Asian youtube channels, and it took me like three weeks to be able to use them properly. And now I will share my personal experience with you guys. So let’s dive right into it:
The first step in using chopsticks is to hold them correctly. Hold the top chopstick between your thumb and index finger, with your thumb on top and your index finger on the bottom. The bottom chopstick should be held between your middle finger and ring finger, with your middle finger on top and your ring finger on the bottom.
Keep your fingers relaxed and avoid gripping the chopsticks too tightly. If you still didn’t get it right, or not feeling comfortable holding it, I will suggest you read this paragraph again. This step almost took me 3 minutes to grasp the basic holding technique.
Once you have the chopsticks in the correct position, practice the basic chopstick movement. This involves using the top chopstick to pick up food by pressing it down on the food and lifting it up. The bottom chopstick remains stationary and acts as a pivot point for the top chopstick. This movement should be smooth and fluid, with the chopsticks moving in a pinching motion. Believe me, you should practice it more often to get used to it.
Once you have mastered the basic chopstick movement, practice picking up different types of food. This includes small items like sushi, larger items like chicken or vegetables, and even slippery foods like noodles. I know sometimes that sucks, but that is the point. If you are eager to learn, you shall pass that. Be patient and don’t get discouraged if you drop food at first. It takes practice to master chopstick use. If a noob like me can do that, so can you.
When you are ready to eat, use chopsticks to bring food to your mouth. It is considered impolite to put chopsticks in your mouth and bite food off of them. Instead, use the chopsticks to pick up small bites of food and bring them to your mouth, and the job is done. It will take you a while, but once you get used to it, you will be able to use the chopsticks you are getting with Chinese foods, instead of using them as a poking device.
Take your time – Don’t rush when using chopsticks. It takes practice to become comfortable and proficient with them. I suggest you enjoy your food while eating it with chopsticks.
Practice – As with anything, practice makes perfect. The more you use chopsticks, the better you will become at using them.
Avoid pointing – Don’t point with chopsticks in a gathering. It is considered impolite and is not something that should be done in polite society.
Use the chopsticks properly – Don’t use chopsticks as drumsticks or to play games. They are meant to be used for eating and should be treated with respect.
Don’t share – Chopsticks are not meant to be shared and should not be passed from person to person. Each person should have their own set of chopsticks.
Be mindful of your surroundings – Be aware of the customs and etiquette of the culture you are in when using chopsticks. Each culture may have its own set of rules and customs when it comes to chopstick use.
In my opinion, chopsticks may seem intimidating at first, but with practice and patience, you will be able to use them with ease. You can start practicing now, and you will be a pro in no time.
