Reading is an essential skill that has many benefits, from improving your vocabulary and comprehension to reducing stress and increasing empathy. I started reading during the Pandemic in 2019, and it really helps me to understand the real world and how to improve myself financially. Some thrilling stories and amazing facts for thoughts can be inspiring for you as well.
I completed 12 books last year. However, forming good reading habits can be challenging, especially in today’s fast-paced world, where there are so many distractions and competing demands for our time. In this blog post, I will explore some of the best ways to develop good reading habits for you, including tips and strategies for making the most of your reading time from my own experience, as well as resources to help you get started. So let’s dive into it:
The first step in developing good reading habits that I think you should work on is to set a goal. This could be something as simple as reading for 20 minutes a day or committing to reading a certain number of books per month. Setting a goal will give you a clear target to work towards and help you stay motivated.
For my case, I set a goal to read consistently and at least 5 pages a day in the beginning whether it takes me 5 minutes or 20 minutes. That thing really helped me to keep myself on track. And the same goes for you. Whatever goal you set for yourself, keep yourself attached to it.
Once you have set a goal, it’s important to make a schedule. This could be as simple as setting aside time each day to read or dedicating certain days of the week to reading. Creating a schedule will help you make reading a regular part of your routine. I would like to suggest reading every day. It helps you to develop consistency for reading on daily basis, second, you don’t have to revise the last pages you completed earlier. This works for me and I hope that it will work for you as well.
Choosing the right material is an important part of developing good reading habits. Selecting books, articles, or other reading materials that interest you will make it more likely that you will stick with them. It’s also a good idea to switch up the type of material you’re reading, such as alternating between fiction and non-fiction.
What I did at the beginning, was that I started two books at the same time, one is for information, knowledge, social interaction, financial growth, or anything, and the second is some kind of fictional book that keep in entertained. I used to read one for 10 minutes right after waking up, and the other one right before going to sleep. I think you should try that too.
Having a comfortable and quiet place to read is crucial to developing good reading habits. Whether it’s a cozy chair, a park bench, or a library, find a place where you can relax and focus on your reading. When I started reading in 2019 and I was in university. I usually took my book with me to read in the free period, but it was very difficult for me to read there.
I Didn’t remember what I read and that was no good. So I started reading books before going to sleep which helps me to reduce mobile use before sleeping, it was good for my eyes as well and I read books peacefully. So I believe choosing a quiet place to read books is important as well.
Technology can be a great tool to help you develop good reading habits. There are many apps and e-readers available that can help you keep track of your reading progress, take notes, and even make recommendations based on your reading history. I like to use my kindle when I am away from my home or during traveling to read.
That really keeps me interactive with my books, and I don’t have to take books with me everywhere. Moreover, I use Evernote to save some lines that I found useful or interesting to read later or to mention somewhere. These kinds of tech and software can help you grasp more out of a book and can enhance your knowledge.
Joining a book club can be a great way to develop good reading habits. Not only will it give you a sense of accountability, but it will also provide you with an opportunity to discuss your reading with others and gain new perspectives. You can suggest a book that you like the most to other people in the club. Or you can ask for a book specifically for a niche to read there.
A club can be pretty useful when you are looking for a detailed summary of a book. I haven’t joined any club or group regarding books, as I am not an extrovert person and but I do read reviews about authors and how they manage to write books with so many experiences. You can start with simple Facebook groups regarding books and let me know what are the outcomes.
Developing good reading habits takes time and patience. Don’t be too hard on yourself if you slip up or miss a day. The important thing is to keep going and stay consistent. Reading more pages a day, and not reading at all the next day is not good. Keep your pace and read according to your goal only and update gradually. No need to rush, go through the book and note down the important points in the form of bullets that you can later use.
In my opinion, developing good reading habits is an essential part of fostering a love for reading and getting knowledge. Take any billionaire for example, they have the habit of reading. Reading can provide you with different ways of thinking even about the same thing. A different perspective each time, if you know what I mean. I believe that after reading this article and practicing the given tips, you’ll be well on your way to becoming a good and consistent reader in no time.
