With more than 100 million followers, Elon Musk Twitter is among most popular users. But how many of those followers are actually real people? According to Nick Bilton at Vanity Fair, there’s a lot of reason to believe that most of those accounts were likely created by Twitter itself. Bilton explains why that may be in an excerpt from his new book, Hatching Twitter. He writes:
Twitter was designed to have its own ecosystem inside it where companies like Coca-Cola or Nike could create branded accounts and post material specific to their needs. This would allow them greater freedom than they had with Facebook, which at one point limited things like types of posts you could make. It seems that while bots aren’t necessarily bad, they can still affect public opinion on issues.
